This page will allow you to make the acquaintance of a Slovenian friend of mine. I would like you to meet TOMAZ MODIC from Ljubljana, Slovenija, where he has lived all his life. Before he was introduced to flyfishing, some 16 years ago, Tom tells me that as a young boy he was fishing for mullet and bream in the salt, or getting chub on live grasshoppers. Since he lives on the edge of a good trout stream, he was bound to become a fly fisherman. "I always wanted to flyfish and enjoy the solitude and beauty that surrounds this type of fishing". Tom started tying flies when he was a freshman in college and continued tying throughout his student years to make some extra money. He graduated from the University of Ljubljana and holds a degree in biology. Getting fed up with tying commercially, and still needing to make some extra money for his own tackle and fishing licenses, Tom started to build flyfishing rods for shops. Sofar he built approximately 120 rods. I am the proud owner of one of them ... a delight to cast and fish with. "Getting connected to the Internet in '97 added a whole new dimension to my flyfishing life", says Tom. He found friends all over the world and visits with them regularly, chatting about flyfishing in general, and exchanging fly patterns and tips about materials almost daily. Tom was our guest in Holland two times demonstrating his impressive flytying skills. He also tied at the Danish Fly Festival, last year. He is a member of the jury of the Open Slovenian flytying championship, and a member of the flyfishing section of the Slovenian Fishing Association. His favorite local streams are the Idrijca, Krka, Radovna and Sava, but his heart belongs to the Unica. Together with some friends, I hope to fish Tom's streams in a few months' time. The picture shows him at Lake Oostvoorne, not the easiest place to fish, but Tom knows how to nail 'em .... even if it takes a San Juan Worm ! Without further ado I'd like you to meet a flydresser and rodbuilder "par excelllence", take a close look at his eye- and fishcatching flies and some of the streams that he fishes.
