Marijn Nieuwenhuizen, a new, young star ascending on the
firmament of tiers of the gaudy fly. I'd like to tell a
little true story about my friendship with him. Some 15 years
ago now when tying at a local club, a father and his young
son joined me at my table.
"Would you mind teaching my son how to tie flies,
Mr. Verschoor ?", was the question. My response was bound
to be positive, and so it happened that my talented student
and I were diligently fooling around with furs and feathers
every Tuesday for a few seasons.
The subject of salmonflies inevitably came up later, and it
didn't take long before we started on our first classic.
A "Childers" was the one Marijn wanted to tie. For reasons too
long to explain we drifted apart after a few years. He moved to
the eastern part of Holland, and had to finish his studies.
It was not until FlyFair 2000 that we met again. A wonderful
surprise ! My young friend now owns a tackle shop in the heart
of Alkmaar which not only proves that `fishing blood is
thicker than water, but also that the world of flytying is much
smaller than we can ever imagine !
Enjoy Marijn's new contribution. It confirms the rule that the
student has gone far beyond the master.
More flies will be added in a not too distant future.
